United States: read a securities margin deficit before assuming you have time
A margin account's securities value is not the amount that belongs to you after the loan. Read the debt, equity and applicable maintenance requirement at the same time. If the account is deficient, a message giving a date does not necessarily prevent the firm from selling collateral sooner.
Confirm borrowing and collateral in the agreement
Investor.gov distinguishes paying in full in a cash account from borrowing from a broker-dealer in a margin account, with the account as collateral. It warns that some applications default to margin and explains that the agreement sets loan, interest and repayment terms. Check the actual account you are opening or using.
Keep the legal firm, account type and signed margin agreement together. A product called “margin” elsewhere is not enough to apply the US securities rules to it. Within a securities account, read the balances and positions actually included in the firm's calculation; the simplified example below deliberately excludes other assets and obligations.
Separate three amounts on a statement: the securities' market value, the money borrowed and the remaining equity. A large market value can coexist with much smaller equity. A price gain or loss and an interest charge are separate changes; record each rather than interpreting every change in equity as a market move.
A fictional maintenance calculation at one moment
Assume 40 shares purchased at USD 100, a USD 2,000 loan and USD 2,000 of initial equity. Later, the assumed share price is USD 70. For this example only, assume a 40% house maintenance requirement and no interest, fees, other positions or changes to the debt. These are invented figures, not an actual margin call or a universal requirement.
| Field | Initial snapshot | Later snapshot | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 shares' value | USD 4,000 | USD 2,800 | Quantity is unchanged; the assumed price falls. |
| Loan | USD 2,000 | USD 2,000 | The example does not assume the debt falls with the share price. |
| Equity: value less loan | USD 2,000 | USD 800 | Later equity is about 28.57% of the securities' value. |
| Assumed 40% requirement | USD 1,600 | USD 1,120 | The later USD 800 equity is USD 320 below this assumption. |
Here, 2,800 − 2,000 = USD 800 measures equity, while 1,120 − 800 = USD 320 measures the assumed deficit. They answer different questions. The USD 320 is neither the whole loan nor the amount of securities the firm must necessarily sell.
If USD 320 were actually applied to reduce the loan in this unchanged snapshot, debt would become USD 1,680 and equity USD 1,120. That conditional calculation is not an instruction to deposit this amount: a changed valuation, interest charge or house requirement changes the result. Confirm the current calculation and how funds would be applied with the firm.
A transfer instruction is not proof that the margin loan has been reduced. Match the processed account entry and updated calculation; do not use an initiated transfer as evidence that a deficiency is resolved.
A notification and a liquidation are separate events
FINRA Rule 2264's disclosure warns that a firm can sell collateral without first contacting you, even after giving a date for meeting a call. It can choose which assets to sell, increase house maintenance requirements without advance written notice, and need not grant an extension. Losses and a remaining shortfall can exceed the original deposit.
Read the actual agreement and the actual message. Preserve the amount requested, the valuation time, the stated requirement, the response date and any later message. A call displayed in the app, a discussion with support and a sale shown in the trade record are different evidence.
If a sale occurred, retain the security, quantity, execution price, charges and resulting loan balance. Compare these with the before-sale account record. Do not assume that every asset was sold, that the debt is zero or that the original position will be restored if the price later recovers.
If a support reply refers to a particular extension or arrangement, ask for its terms and keep the written confirmation. An expectation that someone will call again is not a substitute for those terms. A later complaint about the process also does not by itself reverse a completed sale.
Check the current requirement and the firm's transition status
FINRA Notice 26-10 introduced new intraday margin standards effective 4 June 2026, with implementation permitted through 20 October 2027 for firms needing more time. The notice says the new standards supplement regular maintenance requirements. During this transition, establish which framework your firm uses rather than assuming every account has already moved to the new system.
- Ask what calculation this message concerns: an ordinary maintenance deficiency and an intraday margin deficit should not be silently treated as the same field.
- Record the basis: current positions, debt, valuation time, house requirement and any additional charge. Keep the policy version or dated explanation.
- Check the response outcome: a received transfer, accepted securities or completed liquidation needs an account record showing its effect. Preserve any unresolved difference.
- Recheck after change: a new price, transaction or policy change can make an earlier arithmetic snapshot obsolete. Use the firm's current statement rather than repeating the fictional figure above.
For a dispute, keep the agreement, call and transaction records together and identify the particular entry or action you question. FXCN's broker list does not determine an individual's margin agreement, transition status or required response amount.
Questions when a margin message appears
Does the date in a call guarantee the firm will wait?
No. The margin disclosure explains that protective sales can occur without waiting for the date given. Read the agreement and any specific written arrangement.
Is the securities value my equity or withdrawable cash?
No. In the example, debt must be subtracted to find equity. Withdrawal availability is another account question and cannot be inferred from the securities value alone.
Can I use USD 320 as the amount for my own account?
No. It belongs only to this fictional, unchanged snapshot. Your positions, debts, charges and applicable requirements may differ.
